Lab-Grown vs Natural Diamonds
The most common question we hear, and the one with the most noise around it. Here is the honest version — we source both, so we have no side to sell you.
The short answer
A lab-grown diamond is a diamond. Same carbon, same crystal structure, same hardness, same fire under light. Set two stones of equal quality side by side and no eye — trained or otherwise — can tell them apart. Even a jeweler's loupe can't; separating them takes specialized laboratory equipment. The difference is not what they are. It is where they come from, and what that origin means to you.
How each comes to be
A natural diamond formed over roughly one to three billion years, deep in the earth, and traveled to the surface in ancient volcanic pipes. A lab-grown diamond forms in weeks, in a chamber that recreates those same conditions of heat and pressure. One is a geological event; the other is a scientific achievement. Both are real.
Where they truly differ
- Price. A lab-grown stone typically costs a fraction of a comparable natural one — often 60–80% less at the same size and grade. Practically, this means a larger or higher-quality stone for the same budget.
- Rarity. Natural diamonds are finite; no more are being made. Lab-grown diamonds can be produced indefinitely. If scarcity is part of what a stone means to you, that difference is real and worth weighing.
- Value over time. We'll be plain: an engagement ring is not an investment vehicle, and treating it like one leads to joyless decisions. Whatever the market does, buy the stone for the life it will live, not the market it might meet.
- Meaning. Some people feel the billion-year story in a natural stone and can't imagine the ring without it. Others love that a lab-grown stone lets the budget say yes to the exact cut and size they dreamed of. Neither instinct is wrong. Only one of them is yours.
Certification, either way
Grading applies identically to both: cut, color, clarity, and carat. At Reai, diamonds of one carat and above come with IGI certification unless otherwise noted, and we can accommodate certification for smaller stones on request. A certificate tells you what the stone is regardless of how it was born — insist on one at this level of purchase, from us or anyone else.
In the collection: engagement rings in lab-grown and natural stones.
We source both lab-grown and natural stones, hand-selected for each commission, and we will show you candidates of each kind side by side if you want to see the difference — or the lack of one — with your own eyes.
